Continuing professional development in endoscopy is a growing need among GI surgeons and general surgeons. Monday’s SSAT Continuing Education Panel Advances in Endoscopic Surgical Interventions is designed to fill that need.

“In recognition of the importance of endoscopy, the American Board of Surgery is now mandating formal training in endoscopy for general surgery residents,” said session moderator Ranjan Sudan, MD, chair of the SSAT Continuing Education Committee, which is sponsoring the session.

Dr. Sudan noted that general surgeons perform the vast majority of endoscopic procedures in many rural areas because there are not enough gastroenterologists in these locations. And many SSAT members practice endoscopy, he said, so the session should appeal to a large segment of DDW® attendees.

The session’s four speakers will cover the entire gastrointestinal system: esophagus, stomach, small bowel and colon.

“Because DDW brings together experts in gastrointestinal diseases and endoscopy in one venue, we wanted to capitalize on that opportunity and have two gastrointestinal endoscopists and two gastrointestinal surgeons present the latest advances in endoscopic surgical interventions,” said Dr. Sudan, vice chair of education and director of simulation in the department of surgery at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, NC.

The first speaker, Kevin McGrath, MD, will discuss endoscopic therapy for Barrett’s esophagus, including mucosal ablations and endoluminal ultrasound. Dr. McGrath is professor of medicine and director of endoscopic ultrasound at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, PA.

Next, Bipin Chand, MD, will review bariatric complications, including balloon dilation, stenting, feeding tubes and endoscopic suturing. He will also discuss endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Dr. Chand is associate professor of surgery at Loyola University and director of the Loyola Center for Metabolic Surgery and Bariatric Care in Chicago.

The next two speakers will discuss lower gastro-intestinal endoscopy. Daniel Wild, MD, assistant professor of medicine at Duke University, will review capsule endoscopy, double-balloon and spiral enteroscopy. Finally, Andreas Kaiser, MD, will discuss endoluminal approaches to colorectal lesions, including transanal endoscopic microsurgery, transanal minimally invasive surgery and combined laparoscopy/endoscopy. Dr. Kaiser is professor of clinical surgery at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles.

The session will be co-moderated by Patricia Sylla, MD, an expert in natural orifice surgery and assistant professor of surgery in the division of colon and rectal surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

Please refer to the schedule-at-a-glance in Monday’s issue for the time and location of this and other DDW events.
