DDW: A GI Fellow’s Approach

It’s that time of year again! DDW 2015 is fast approaching, bringing along with it over 4,000 abstracts and hundreds of lectures, research symposia, workshops, booths and exhibits. Though exciting, a first (or even second or third) trip to DDW can be quite daunting. If not careful, you might spend the entire conference trying to decide where to go and what to see rather than actually learning and participating. Alas, I hope to provide a few strategies to maximize the fellow’s DDW experience.

Don’t Miss Out!
We all know that DDW can be expensive. This year, the societies have worked hard to make the meeting accessible to trainees by providing free registration for trainee members, discounted conference hotel rates, transportation to and from the venue, and free online access to DDW on Demand, with registration. Take advantage of these perks by registering by April 1 and reserving rooms early. You won’t regret the trip!

Plan Before You Dive In.
A successful trip to DDW 2015 requires some element of planning. Way too often I have heard about a session or event an hour or day too late.

  • Think about what you want to gain from the conference experience this year, whether that be a particular clinical interest like IBD or liver disease, research highlights, or clinical pearls to kick-start board prep.
  • Look through the DDW program and highlight two to three “can’t miss” talks, posters, or sessions for each day. You can flag these on MyDDW or add them in your personal calendar. Even if you don’t have an opportunity to do this until your flight to DC in May, the advanced planning will be well worth it.

Postgraduate Review Courses
The AGA Spring Postgraduate Course (May 16 & 17) and the ASGE Annual Postgraduate Course (May 18) are a perfect opportunity to gain high-yield GI board review material. I typically take a look at the course schedule and target course material where I know I could use some review. Registration for both courses is discounted for trainees until April 1.

Joint Plenary Session
Want to catch up on the best DDW abstracts in one spot? At the AGA/ASGE Joint Presidential Plenary on May 17, invited speakers will present the top GI and endoscopy research abstracts submitted to DDW 2015. As I often do not have time to attend Poster Sessions or Distinguished Abstract Plenaries, this session serves as my weekend research fix.

AGA Trainee and Young GI Track
For me, AGA Trainee and Young GI Track sessions are central to my DDW experience. The AGA Mentor and Advisor Program: Reception for Trainees/Young GIs: An Evening with AGA Mentors on May 16 is a perfect opportunity to network with potential mentors and fellows from around the world. The Board Review Course on May 18 is another way to prime the brain for GI boards. This year, discount coupons for DDSEP® 7 will be available on a first-come, first-served basic at the Board Review Course. If you rather focus on life after fellowship, Career and Professional-Related Issues, on May 18, aims to teach senior fellows all that they need to know about landing that first job.

Make it Memorable.

  1. Don’t try to do it all.
  2. Read DDW Daily News each day for up-to-date news and last-minute program changes.
  3. Remember that networking opportunities during DDW are nearly as important as the learning experiences.

With the right planning, DDW 2015 will be a highlight of your year! Let me know in the comments below what you look forward to most.
